Math Games

Here's a little recap of what we've been up to at summer school lately.

We made "patternpillars" in my K-1 class.
The kids were awesome, they mastered AB, ABC, AAB, ABB, AABB, ABCD and ABCDEF patterns...you name it.

We also did a shape hunt, they came up with some great ideas! (Of course I let them take theirs home without thinking to take a picture, hence all of the teacher examples...)

Yesterday we did non-standard units of measure using "feet". Our feet! We read "Jack and the Beanstalk" and made our own giant/ogres. Each group was assigned to make a body part and measure it using "feet". Once we put the ogre together they could see how each the body parts were different based on their idea of the measurement.
I saw this idea on a teaching blog but I can't remember which one, I'm sorry I can't give you credit!

With my 2nd grade class we worked on subtraction and played games using dice and dominoes. We also used these word problem dice to practice mixed addition and subtraction. (Also an idea I got from a blog and can't remember which, sorry!)
Next week we'll be doing fractions, I'm excited because I will be using the "Fraction Action" unit from Cara Carroll at The First Grade Parade. You can find it at her Teacher's Pay Teacher's store here.

Finally after summer school yesterday Dan and I headed to the pool. He smoked some ribs for his camping trip while I read and floated in the pool...I see more of this in my future.
