It's Thursday

Today was the last day of summer school,  horray! I'm so glad to be done and have my summer begin! I can't wait to sleep in, every day. These next few weeks will go by quickly though; 4th of July, my trip to NY, curriculum map training, my 10 year reunion and back to school.

I don't think I will teach summer school next summer but I'm glad I had the opportunity and made some extra cash. Goodbye debt!

Today I grocery shopped and saved $79! Fry's is having AMAZING sales, you should check it out.

I'm prepping for our trip up north, we always seem to bring more than we need but whatareyougonnado?

Tomorrow I plan to lay by the pool, bake my sis in law's birthday cake and make 2 kinds of salsa. And do laundry, and pack. We'll see what I actually wind up finishing. I have my outfits all planned out in my head, it's just a matter of putting them along with my black and torquoise cowboy boots in my suitcase. Get excited for the cowboy boots!

Anyway, I'm off to get a jump on the packing so I can spend more time by the pool tomorrow and hopefully turn up somewhat tan.

Bonne nuit!

Math Games

Here's a little recap of what we've been up to at summer school lately.

We made "patternpillars" in my K-1 class.
The kids were awesome, they mastered AB, ABC, AAB, ABB, AABB, ABCD and ABCDEF patterns...you name it.

We also did a shape hunt, they came up with some great ideas! (Of course I let them take theirs home without thinking to take a picture, hence all of the teacher examples...)

Yesterday we did non-standard units of measure using "feet". Our feet! We read "Jack and the Beanstalk" and made our own giant/ogres. Each group was assigned to make a body part and measure it using "feet". Once we put the ogre together they could see how each the body parts were different based on their idea of the measurement.
I saw this idea on a teaching blog but I can't remember which one, I'm sorry I can't give you credit!

With my 2nd grade class we worked on subtraction and played games using dice and dominoes. We also used these word problem dice to practice mixed addition and subtraction. (Also an idea I got from a blog and can't remember which, sorry!)
Next week we'll be doing fractions, I'm excited because I will be using the "Fraction Action" unit from Cara Carroll at The First Grade Parade. You can find it at her Teacher's Pay Teacher's store here.

Finally after summer school yesterday Dan and I headed to the pool. He smoked some ribs for his camping trip while I read and floated in the pool...I see more of this in my future.

Summer Schooled

Busy, busy day! First day of Summer School = CHAOS. I can't even bring myself to recap the day but I'll give you a few highlights...
  • 100 Kindergarten - 3rd grader students spread over 4 periods (yes the 3rd graders are mixed with the K kids...hence the stress)
  • School shaped like a maze
  • 1 Peanut allergy at snack time
  • 1 Diabetic
  • 2 hours after school splitting my classes with the teacher they just hired (who has no classroom, lesson plans or materials, glad I'm not him but looks like I'm sharing!)
  • 2 welcome letters
  • 8 weekly updates
Lucky for me it's Monday - Thursday until June 30...15 days to go! Fire drill tomorrow, here goes nothing!

After summer school I came home and hit the kitchen. Last night I finished 2 batches of chocolate chip cookies and a loaf of banana bread. Today it was a crockpot of sloppy joe's, half for us and the other half for my sis and bro in law who are having a baby girl Thursday! I also made them an Eggplant Parmesan to freeze for when they get home from the hospital.

Tomorrow I'm cooking for a dear teacher friend whose husband was recently deployed for 1 year! Bless her heart. It will be a dairy free enchilada casserole...wish me luck!
